You may think that decorating a small space is a hassle, but there are actually a lot of qualities that a tiny room can add to your home. These are places where you can create cozy and intimate settings that foster conversation and connection, while the room itself wraps comfortably around its inhabitants.
When it comes to furniture you’re going to have to make some choices. Using a lot of smaller seats and furnishings is going to make the space look cluttered. Rather, use one large piece such as a sofa, and then have smaller settings placed around it. In smaller rooms seated furnishings can be arranged facing one another in L and U shaped configurations in order to create coves of conversation.
As you arrange furniture within the room, be careful not to cut off the natural flow of the space. Windows should be left unblocked, and doors and hallways should always be clear. This will eliminate stuffy feelings and give the environment a sense of being fluid and mobile.
The style of your furniture is also going to be important when decorating smaller spaces. You want to use pieces which are sleek, simple, and streamlined. Complex, ornate furnishings can make the room feel cluttered and cramped. The same goes for large, complicated floral patterns. Luxury and comfort is fine, and you can choose pieces which are crafted from rich, quality materials; however the design itself should be relatively reserved.
One way to save space in a small room is to make your furniture do double duty. You can create coffee tables using an old wooden chest with a flat top that will also have a wealth of storage space inside. You can also often find ottomans with flip tops that allow you to store possessions within. Another idea is to get rid of your dedicated TV stand and instead use a set of shelves to hold your media, allowing you to store decorative and functional possessions on the other shelves.
In general lighter colors in furnishings and wall treatments will tend to make a room open up and feel larger than it really is. This is a great trick for creating the illusion of space in a smaller room. However you are not limited to bright, light, or pastel tones, and in some cases darker colors will be preferable as they can help to increase the intimacy of the space. Just make sure that darker color treatments are balanced out with light colored features throughout the area.
Illumination is another important element to consider when decorating a small space. In general you want your points of light to be spread out near the walls. These glowing fixtures will tend to draw the eye, capturing attention and diverting it from the walls. Natural sunlight coming through open windows is the best light source for this method. In some cases you will want to couple regular fixtures with ambient illumination to give you the option of turning the room from an open flowing space to a cool, intimate setting.
