Spray paint is a versatile tool that you can use to give virtually any object in your home a complete makeover. It’s easy to use, inexpensive, and the cleanup is a snap. Unlike with regular acrylic paint where you need brushes, rollers, trays, and thinner, spray paint is entirely self contained, and all you need is the can itself, and a drop cloth to prevent excess from hitting objects behind your target.
Wooden items work especially well with spray paint. If you make sure to very lightly sand the wood before you start, the material should practically soak up the color. This can be used to give new life to items such as shelves, drawers, mirrors, picture frames, and dressers.
Another great technique is to use metallic spray paint to touch up metal items such as lamps, old fixtures, and ceiling fans. Colors such as brushed bronze, or steel, can give these items a brand new, fresh out of the box look. Be sure to take the objects apart, removing any glass, bulbs, cords, or exposed electrical components before you spray them down. If necessary, tape off parts of the item that you don’t want affected.
One place where spray paint excels is in touching up outdoor items. Pieces made from hardwood or whicker can be completely remade in just a few minutes. You can also use this technique to add color to barbecues, doors, shutters, radiators glass, and other outdoor equipment. There are even special plastic adhesive spray paints which can be used to give a fresh color to plastic chairs and tables.
They also make specialty chalk board spray paints which can be used for novelty projects. All you have to do is frame out a board using painters tape, then spray an even coat on a wall, piece of wood, or any exposed surface that is smooth and flat. The result will be a black or green chalk board that you can actually write and erase on, without leaving smudges. This is a great application for schools, day care centers, and children’s bedrooms.
Another similar spray paint creates a giant magnetic sheet across a surface that magnets will be automatically attracted to. However this substance is actually a primer, meaning that it can be sprayed on a wall, and then covered over with any colored paint you want to create a stealthy secret wherever you like. This can work in child environments, but is also useful in a variety of office settings.
When you’re finished, it’s important to dispose of the spray paint in a proper manner. You can contact your local department of waste management to find out where empty cans can be safely dropped off. Alternatively you can call a nearby recycling plant to find out if your old spray paint cans are able to be recycled.
The application of spray paint to old worn out objects can give them a fresh sense of renewed vigor and life. Whether it’s wood or metal, outdoor or indoor, almost any accessory in the home can be reborn in just a few minutes, with a quick spray from an inexpensive can of paint.
