Decorating and Decluttering for Spring

Spring has arrived, and there is a feeling of renewal and rejuvenation in the air. The trees are blossoming, and new flowers are springing forth. In this atmosphere, how could you possibly leave your house the way it is? It’s not for nothing that many cultures and countries have a concept of spring cleaning, and this does not just refer to frantic dusting but also to redesigning the look of your home.

So what can you do to make your home look even better?

The first thing you can do is de-clutter. Clear out all of your drawers, shelves, and cupboards. Don’t be such a hoarder. Do you really need all of those old papers and bric-a-brac? Not every single old bus ticket or newspaper that was produced will be an automatic collector’s item in another fifty years. This is also the ideal time to go through your children’s clothing as the seasons change. Don’t keep every single item, unless it is in tiptop condition. Those little dresses did look cute when you first bought them, but there is little point in handing them down to your third daughter as they are full of stubborn stains that will no longer wash clean. And when de-cluttering, always remember the main rule – be totally ruthless and practical, leaving no room to be sentimental!

Take a look at the way your furniture is laid out. Without breaking your back, take a look and see whether the couch really belongs against that particular wall. Maybe it would be a good idea to put the table lengthways instead of sideways. You can always change it back again – it is the change that makes it look better.

You might consider a new coat of washable paint for some of your rooms. Choose a light, bright color, such as magnolia, light peach, or pale green, all of which conjure up a feeling of growth, spring, and newness. These colors will probably blend in with most of your furniture, as well as brightening your rooms.

If you can’t manage to paint your house this year, then at least wash down the walls and get rid of those little finger marks that accumulate over the year.

Treat yourself to new area rugs – animal print rugs would look great in your kids’ rooms, while natural flokati rugs are for the adults.

Complete the look by washing and repairing your curtains thoroughly. If you can run to it financially, you may even consider buying some new ones. Clean out your window frames and blinds from the dust that may have accumulated over the past few months. (When you are at work every day, you may still be a very diligent housewife, but one of the most neglected tasks in many homes is cleaning the window frames and blinds!)

Now is also the time to look at the wall designs and pictures. How long have you had them? Are you getting somewhat bored with them? This is the time to put up some others just for variety.

When spring is in the air, you can make your home feel as if it is brand new. And of course, it goes without saying that if you are seized with this feeling of rejuvenation at any other time of the year, follow it through and make it spring in your house all year round!
