Storing Your Awning for Winter
by Jim Ames

Description: Tips for caring for and storing your awning away for winter.

If you want to have a shelter against rain or sun outside your house, you can put an Awning. It is fabricated framework with acrylic or cloth cover. It will increase beauty of your house. With different colors it may give new identity to your building. The support of an awning is your building. Since it is light weight structure this support is enough for awning.

An awning is a cheaper way to have a nice shade to protect from rain or sun.. If you want your awnings to look new, regular awning care and maintenance is vital. Since awnings are an investment they should be properly maintained for years. Especially in winter they should be stored carefully.

Proper storage of awning is as important as regular cleaning and maintenance. If you live in an area which gets great snow, consider removing awning in the winter. Before storing the awning make sure to clean them thoroughly. Dust will encourage mildew growth. These marks are extremely hard to remove and your awning will, frankly, stink! Storing your awnings in a dry location to further protect them from mildew is necessary.

Cotton awning should be wiped out and dried then only they should be packed away. Even for awnings with lesser degree acrylic and polyester this care has to be taken. It can be packed wet for 48 hours but not more than that. Mildew will set and the stitching on awnings is made out of cotton hence this will rot and your awning will fall to pieces!

Removal and storage services for awnings are offered by many professional awning manufacturers. If you have a fixed frame awning, the frame can be dismantled for the winter months. It will be possible only when appropriate slip fittings are fixed with the awning. People remove the fabric and leave the frame up over the winter.

An awning that can be rolled and folded against a building is called as Retractable Awning it is entirely supported by the building itself. This awning is self storing when retracted. In winter the loose hanging valance of retractable awnings can be removed for winter storage. Retractable awning can be kept and used for whole year. Another way is keeping the unit retracted and bringing the crank handle inside.

Since awnings are costly investment they should last for many years. Hence we should take of it. Storing in winter at dry and airy place gives longer life to the awnings. They should be stored after cleaning and wiping the dust completely to prevent form mildew growth.
