Summertime in the Bedroom

It’s the summer time, which means that it’s the season to bring some sunshine into your bedroom. You need to enjoy the light and brightness of long summer days, yet be able to cool down and relax in your room rather than wilt in the heat. Put away the thick blankets and bedspreads, and chill out.

Whether you are sharing your bedroom with a Significant Other or sleeping alone, your room is very much your castle and your expression of yourself. If you are sharing with someone else, you will want to add a touch of romance, and if you are on your own you at least want your room to be welcoming and fun.

If you have the time to do so, it might be a good idea to start by painting the walls. Summer colors need to be pale, cool colors. Examples are cream, magnolia, yellow, or a very pale blue. White is best avoided as it can be too bright and almost blinding at times. Then it’s time to change the curtains. Take down anything that’s heavy or wintry. You want curtains that will maintain your privacy and remove glare, but will allow some of the beautiful summer sunshine into your room. Lace curtains are a great option, or pale cotton with a printed flowery motif.

Decorate the walls with pretty summer scenes – pictures of beaches and sunny, country views.

Now let’s take a look at the bedding. In the meantime, you will be sleeping with light sheets and a very thin blanket at the most, depending on where you live, whether you have good air conditioning and fans, and how hot the nights are in the summer. Choose relaxing, summery colors like yellow, peach, beige, pale blue or light green. If you want sheets with a pattern on them, choose floral or beach designs to give you that great feeling of summer.

Sort through your cupboards and put away your sweaters for the meantime. Make space for your summer clothes, as this is what you will be wearing for the next few months.

How shall we decorate the floor? As the weather is warmer, you will be more likely to be walking around barefoot. One of the nicest treats you can therefore buy yourself is a soft, luxurious area rug. A natural flokati rug, or a bright yellow rug, will add to the feeling of summer in your bedroom.

Although you will have natural sunlight, you still need decent lighting in the evening (if you are still up of course after the long summer evening!). A good lamp strategically placed above your bed, with a fan, will add to your comfort during hot, restless nights when you may find yourself unable to sleep and wanting to curl up with a good book.

For even more color and fresh scents, there is nothing like a vase of summer flowers to add to the summery atmosphere in your bedroom.

You don’t have to stay with the same look all year round. Celebrate the summer with some of these ideas, and you will feel cool and refreshed all the way through.
