Delightful Sunroom Decorating
by Joey Pebble

The defining characteristic of a sunroom is the presence of many large windows. These connect the room to the natural outdoor world, bridging the gap between home and garden. As you decorate the sunroom, you should retain some of the stylistic elements from the rest of the house, while also bringing in aspects of the natural outdoor world. The focus of this space should be on the windows, as they draw the home out and the world in.

In general the colors you use in a sunroom should be light and airy. Try to choose wall hues that will glow with the illumination of the sunlight that will come streaming through the windows. Some common choices include pastel pinks, turquoise, pink, orange, and yellows.

As far as furnishings, you should choose pieces that play up the room’s connection to the outdoor world. Furniture made of whicker, rattan, or teak is appropriate, as those are materials you will often find used in outdoor furnishings. If possible try to choose pieces which invoke both the natural world, and the style found throughout the rest of the home.

One of the keys to effectively decorating a sunroom is to figure out what the purpose of the space will be. If it is simply a place to lounge and relax than you want to have very comfortable and laid back furnishings. If you would prefer to use it as an activity center or a game room, then shelves and a sturdy game table will be essential.

Whatever the purpose, a sunroom will be most effective if it is organized in a free flowing open manner. You want the space to be filled more with light than with objects. The natural flow of the room should be easy and relaxed, making it easy to step into and out of the space.

In general you will want the windows in your sunroom to be wide open allowing natural healthy illumination to flow into the environment. However there are some instances where you will want to shut out the light and the rest of the world. You have a number of options for ways to limit and control the windows in your sunroom; however you want to be careful as whatever you choose will change the nature of the space in a fairly dramatic way.

Probably the most common option is to use cloth curtains to filter the sunlight. If you use lighter, more translucent fabrics the sun will cause them to glow with a gentle illumination. However thicker fabrics will allow you to black out the light and isolate the space. Whatever you choose make sure they can easily be tied back when its time to let the sun back into your sunroom.

Bamboo curtains are another option that can be matched to wood or bamboo furnishings and accessories in the room. You also have the option of purchasing shutters. Those will effectively shut out the outside world, but can also be removed completely allowing you to leave the windows bare whenever the situation calls for it.

There are a lot of different ways that you can decorate a sunroom but the key is to play up the natural features of the space. The windows should be the focal points, with all furnishings chosen and arranged to create a union between the interior and exterior of the home.
