If your teenager has their own bathroom or shares one with other teenage siblings, they probably have some definite ideas about how they would like to see it decorated. Just as is the case with the bedrooms of teenagers, the best decorating plan generally involves including them in the process. When a teenager is able to help make some of the decorating decisions, they are more likely to be pleased with the end result. Plus, it's a good way of giving them a chance to explore their own creative ideas. If more than one teen shares a bathroom, be sure that everyone gets a chance to contribute to the final design so that everyone is happy.

Teenage girls generally have an affinity for funky styles, bright and bold colors, and a flair for whatever is fun. Popular bathroom themes for teenage girls include rubber ducks, a favorite cartoon character, or their favorite stuffed animal. A Hollywood movie star theme, spa theme or a bathroom decorated in "green" environmental decor can also be popular choices. Whichever she chooses, it's best to be prepared for her decorating tastes to change over time. This is why focusing the theme on accessories rather than wallpaper and painted designs is often the best approach when decorating a teenager's bathroom. That way when her mood changes and she's ready for a "bathroom makeover," you won't have to completely remodel the room. You also won't feel as though you have to make every decorating accessory a permanent fixture in the room, and your teen will have plenty of decorating versatility to work with and enjoy.

Teenage boys often prefer a simpler approach to their bathroom decor as compared to girls. However, decorating the room with an outdoor theme, or designing the room to look like a room in a cabin can sometimes be appealing. Music themes can also be a popular choice for a teenage boy's bathroom. However, in many cases your teen might prefer a simple decorating style, focusing on his favorite colors or neutral shades that give the room an appealing masculine look. Because teenage boys are not generally known for keeping a neat and tidy bathroom, it can be helpful to focus on storage features which will make it easy to keep the room clean and organized. A large clothes hamper, wastebasket, and shower caddy are all great additions to a teenage boy's bathroom. Although boys generally do not have as many bathroom accessories as girls, they still need a place to store toiletry items such as shampoo, bath gel, cologne, and hair products. A countertop caddy for the bathroom counter can provide a place to store many of these items. A water resistant CD player, MP3 player or shower radio can add the perfect finishing touch to a teenage boy's bathroom.
