Decorative Ideas for Teen Boy Furniture
by Alyssa Davis

Decorating a room for a teenage boy can be a lot of fun, especially if you get him involved in the process. It's important to remember that a teenager's room is much more than just a place to sleep. Teenagers also use their bedroom for studying, hanging out with friends, listening to music, and sometimes even playing video games. When designing a room for a teenage boy, you should always keep their likes and dislikes in mind. Sometimes a boy will not appear to be interested in decorating their room, but you should still consult with him before making any major decorating changes. By keeping him in the loop, even if he doesn't seem to have strong decorating preferences, you will be assured of creating a room that he will enjoy.

Great Furniture Choices for Teenage Boys

Boys are often fond of rough and rugged pieces of furniture, so you shouldn't have too much trouble coming up with some teen boy furniture that he will love. You can often repurpose furniture pieces from other rooms in the house in a way that a teenager will really enjoy. For example, having a small loveseat or comfortable chair in the bedroom can offer a lot of versatility. A futon is also a great choice. Not only can a futon provide extra seating space when hanging out with friends, but it can also be folded out and used as a spare bed when someone stays overnight. Every teenager's room should also include a desk, so that they have somewhere to study and do their homework. If your teen has a computer in his room, be sure the desk you select is ergonomically designed to be the correct height for computer use. Writing desks are often convenient to use, but the desk top is simply not the right height for comfortable keyboard usage. A small computer desk with a keyboard tray which also provides plenty of work space for books, writing and reading is usually the best choice. Use furniture pieces in interesting new ways, such as using a steamer trunk at the foot of the bed to store bedding. A bookcase can be used to display sports trophies and other mementos, in addition to providing plenty of space for books. Finding cheap teenage furniture could be as easy as looking around your attic for unused pieces.

Choosing a Color Scheme

Teenage boys are often quite fond of natural color schemes, such as green, blue, brown, and gray. If he is interested in sports, the team colors of his favorite sports team would also be a great choice. Sports team colors can create the perfect backdrop if he collects team memorabilia. Color schemes that mirror outdoors themes are also popular with teens. Many teenagers also have a strong preference for dark and dramatic colors. Black and white can also be great choices.

Adding the Final Touches

If you've focused your decorating efforts on what would be most complementary to what your teen loves most, you probably won't have to do a lot of additional decorating. Add a few useful pieces of furniture, give the walls a fresh coat of paint, and let him do the rest. Adding a new throw rug can be a nice added touch, especially if the room has hardwood floors. New window treatments can also provide a fresh new look.
