Practical and Fun Teen Room Makeover Ideas
by Jessica Ackerman

Teenagers spend a lot of time in their bedroom, not only for sleeping but also as a place to study and hang out with friends. Having a room that reflects their interests and personal style is very important to a teen, so when thinking of teen room makeover ideas, always involve your teen in the planning process, and let them make as many of the design decisions as possible.

Get a Whole New Look with Paint

Paint is one of the least expensive and quickest ways to give a room a whole new look. Teens are often fond of unique color combinations, and often tend to like dark and dramatic colors. When choosing a paint color for your teen's room you might choose to indulge your teen's wall color preferences, even if you consider it to be a shocking color. After all, it's just paint, and can be painted over in the future. However, if you do have certain guidelines on colors, let your teen know what colors are allowable or off-limits before they start to plan. Even if you prefer a lighter shade for the walls, you might be able to use their favorite colors for accent colors.

Create Living Space

Instead of focusing just on the bedroom aspects, try helping your teen design the room as their own personal living space as. Non-traditional bedroom furniture such as a loveseat or sofa can be used very effectively in a teen's room, and a desk is an absolute must. Try adding a futon for versatility, which can be used as seating space during the day while providing an extra bed at night if a friend sleeps over. Bean bag furniture is also popular for a teen's room, as are fun inflatable pieces of furniture. It is often possible to repurpose old furniture pieces in a teen's room, such as those you might have in the attic. Garage sales and flea markets are also great places to find furniture for a teen's room. Older furniture pieces can be take on a whole new funky look with a fresh coat of paint. Try being creative with furniture, such as using two filing cabinets as the base for a spacious desk, using an old door or piece of plywood as the desk top.

Accessories Make the Room

If your teen has a theme in mind for their room, such as sports or a retro look, accessories are a great way of adding a lot of style. Try giving your teen a budget for accessories and let them shop for what appeals to them most. Bedding and window treatments can be used to add a lot of color to the room, as can accessories such as lamps and wall art. Make sure to create plenty of storage in your teen's room by adding shelves or a bookcase. A closet organization system is also a great addition to a teen's bedroom makeover project, as it can give them more storage space as well as helping them stay organized.
