Making Your Teen’s Bedroom the Place to Be

The teenage years – most of us over the age of twenty are extremely glad that they’re over. Those were the years when you spent a lot of time in your cave, otherwise known as your bedroom, or slammed that same bedroom door in a dramatic rage when you felt frustrated with the world around you. And now these are the years when you watch your own teenage children behave in exactly the same way that you did, and you realize what you put your parents through during those annoying six years.

If you are privileged enough to be allowed into your teen’s sanctuary or you are even able to open the door with all the clutter that is often found in many a teen’s bedroom, you may want to make some decorating suggestions.

Many teenagers like to decorate or plan their own bedrooms. So here are some good ideas:

  • Let your teen paint the room in their own distinctive style. You may not like the color that has been chosen, or the way that it is painted, but as you are not the person that will sleep or spend time in there it does not need to bother you. Allow your teen to express himself in his own way. Perhaps she is artistically inclined and would like to paint a colorful mural on the wall. Another popular form of self-expression is putting up banners from their favorite sports team or music group.
  • Your daughter may like the idea of taking colorful fabrics, tying them together, and putting them up as a decorative wall hanging.
  • Let your teen discover the joys of flea markets and secondhand furniture stores. This might make decorating your teen’s room a lot cheaper as the furniture and accessories that they wish to buy will be far less expensive than anything new that they could get from any store. In fact, many teens like to opt for what is different and unconventional, and they are far more likely to find this at a garage sale than in their local department store. And remember, if you are allowing your teen to build up his or her creativity, bite your tongue even if you think that their latest piece is totally hideous. If it isn’t dangerous or illegal and doesn’t break the bank, who cares?
  • Donate some nice accessories, such as a cute area rug. A soft floral rug on the floor can really add a cool touch to your teen’s room. Throw pillows and colorful bedspreads can also look good.
  • Find some extra shelving to help your teen organize that faithful companion of most teenagers – clutter and loads of keepsakes – more easily.

As teenagers grow up, an essential part of building their personalities is allowing them to express their own creativity. By encouraging them to decorate and build their own rooms and décor, you are providing them with a vital tool in this important process.
