A tiny kitchen can be a big problem. In this culinary abode you want to have as much space as possible to stretch out and work without having to deal with clutter, congestion, and chaos. Luckily, there are a variety of ways that you can maximize your space in order to get optimal efficiency from every inch, making even the tiniest of kitchens a productive and comfortable environment.
The very first thing you have to do is to get organized. You want every tool to have a set place and every utensil to have a home. Keeping things organized will allow you to pack more items into a smaller area, and since they are all in a regular position, you will actually be able to retrieve them when you need them. Keeping things organized is actually less of a decorating tip and more of a habit, but it is a vital one to develop if you have space issues in the kitchen.
Another thing you can do to maximize space is to get rid of clutter. The clutter in this room will consist of more than just tchotchkes and decorative knick knacks; often it will involve pieces that actually seem like useful items. Often people purchase tools such as juicers, sandwich makers, and novelty grills with the belief that these devices will change their culinary lives. All too often these products end up sitting unused in the kitchen for months, taking up valuable space. That counts as clutter. It’s time to look around your kitchen and seriously consider removing anything that you don’t actually need.
One way to save some space is to use an extra closet or some shelving in an underused room as a pantry. This pantry can store not only food and supplies, but also any overflow from the kitchen including extra utensils, tools, and accessories. This is also a good place to store a folding table and chairs for when guests come over.
When you actually get to decorating the space, you should try and focus on the walls. These are like huge blank canvases, upon which you can work your decorative magic. The good news is that the walls are not functional space, so you can pretty much cover them with whatever you want, and as long as hangings don’t stick out too much, they won’t cut down on the functionality of the room.
Your wall efforts can consist of a variety of media. You can paint or stencil directly onto the walls if you want a permanent look, however most people prefer to leave the walls a neutral tone, and to add interest with various hangings. These pieces can include family pictures, paintings, decorative metal or tile art, or novelty signs.
One thing you have to be careful of is that you don’t hang anything which can be harmed by the unique environment of this room. Kitchens can get hot, and that heat can warp paper or other non-durable products. Further, the kitchen is often a place where things get messy, splashes, splats, and spills all can and will occur. Often the best art for a kitchen is something protected with heavy glass, or made from highly resistant materials such as plastic or wrought iron.
A small kitchen can be a bit of a burden, but these challenges can be overcome by being organized, and using a few creative space saving techniques. As long as you focus your decorative efforts on the walls, and maintain floor and counter space for work, you should be able to create a super efficient kitchen with every utensil right at your fingertips.
