Why We Love Vinyl Decor
by Kiersten Gurry

Take a walk back in time with me to the hallways, kitchens, and living rooms of yesteryear. Imagine, in particular, the wallpaper: Orange and avocado green? An unsightly duo from the 60s. Tiny pink bud roses? A favorite of the 80s. South-of-the border décor? A popular theme from the 90s.

In the last twenty years, traditional wallpaper has slowly been phasing out, generally in favor of regular paint. Faux painting techniques became popular in the more recent past, and terms like “ragging” and “sponging” were on the lips of more than one home decorator, right about ten years ago.

Today, cumbersome wallpaper can be quickly and economically replaced by vinyl wall clings – large “stickers” that you carefully smooth onto your walls, mirrors, or windows. These are also known as vinyl wall decals, vinyl wall art, and vinyl décor.

Vinyl wall décor has several things going for it. Namely, it is:

  • inexpensive
  • easy to install
  • available in many styles

Cost

A small, single page of vinyl wall clings can cost less than $10. Plan to spend about $30 - $50 for something substantial, and about $80 for an impressive trio of stickers large enough to decorate an entire room.

eBay is a good place to begin uncovering pages and pages of vinyl wall cling styles. Additionally, use a search engine like Google to discover a host of other companies that offer vinyl wall art through their own ecommerce system. If you prefer to purchase locally, try Target, Macy’s, The Home Depot, or Michaels. Coupons and sales will help you save a few dollars here and there.

Installation

Unlike other wall coverings, vinyl clings are easy to position and reposition. Peel them off and stick them on as often as you like – all without the use of glue or other adhesives. There’s no need to prepare the wall, other than wiping the dust off. (The clings stick best to clean, dry surfaces.) It really couldn’t be easier!

This no-mess, yet personalized, option is favored by apartment tenants leasing a beige box, stylish undergrads stacked in a dormitory, and other people passing through. No hammer. No nails. No extra fee for damage to the sheetrock.

Variety

Vinyl wall clings come in a wide variety: you will discover many different colors, sizes, shapes, and themes. Popular choices include large silhouettes of trees, gigantic flowers and grasses, and quotable sayings and phrases.

Colorful vinyl clings are perfect for a child’s bedroom. Choose Disney princesses and castles; birds, butterflies, and other critters; a monkey in a banana tree; or other shapes and designs.

These user-friendly clings will compliment any wall that you would like to dress up. How about that awkward bathroom corner or the less-than-exciting entryway? Tiny photorealistic goldfish, trailing from the wall to the mirror, would certainly add a little whimsy to the bathroom; a trailing vine or abstract design might work for the entry.

Where can I get vinyl wall stickers?

You will uncover pages and pages of vinyl wall cling styles on eBay. Additionally, use a search engine like Google to discover a host of other companies that offer vinyl wall art. If you would like to purchase locally, try Target, Macy’s, The Home Depot, or Michaels. Coupons and sales will help you save a few dollars here and there.

Next time you take on the task of sprucing up your home, consider the wonderful world of vinyl wall décor.
