Get Creative With Your Home Office
by Lloyd Burrell

Today everybody is trying to make an extra buck, and working from home can be a great way to do so. However, it can also be a huge waste of time if you do not take the time to make sure that you have a place to work where you will be able to get things done efficiently and without interruptions.

You will need to get creative in setting up your home office, but you will also have to negotiate the pitfalls. Most people simply do not realize the importance of home office planning when it comes to getting the most out of their time.

The Difficulty of Separating "Home" and "Office"

Distractions are the most common problem encountered by people who work at home. Even people who do not have kids are at risk for becoming distracted while working; simply being at home tends to put many people in a more relaxed, less focused state of mind. For this reason it is important to think very carefully about the ideal location for your home office before deciding where to put it.

What Location For Your Home Office?

The perfect location for your office is a place that is low-traffic. If you are considering having a room double as your office, consider how often the room will be used for other purposes and at what times of the day.

A popular choice is often the kitchen, because there is usually already a table in there and you can often shut yourself off from the rest of the house without disturbing anybody. A common office storage solution for the kitchen is a computer armoire.

If your family only watches television in the evening and you only work in the morning, the den might double nicely as a work area. Also consider what else is in the room you are considering; if you know you will be distracted by a television, pick a room that does not have one. Some other factors you may want to consider:

  • Amount of space available
  • Power outlet availability
  • The room's lighting at different times of day

Organizing Creatively--Setting up your Equipment

Once you have picked out the perfect location for you home office, the next step is to transform that location from a room or corner into a functional office. At this point it is a good idea to do some visualization exercises. Try to see yourself working in your office, performing all the tasks that are necessary to your work. Your goal is to come up with a basic idea for the layout of your office's furnishings and equipment.

The Perfect Office Desk

Most likely, the way your office is laid out will be largely determined by the size, shape, and features of your office desk. Therefore, investing in a desk that meets your needs perfectly is a good idea. A well-organized workspace is one of the best ways to ensure maximum productivity.

First, before going out and buying the latest contemporary office desk furniture, you should determine what your needs are and how many of them can be met using pieces of furniture you already have lying around the house unused. You could save a lot of money by buying a smaller desk if you put your printer or other computer accessories on an old end table. Be careful though; it is not worth having a cluttered workspace just to save a little money, and, in the end, it will cost you more in productivity.

A Place to Sit in Your Home Office

Thrifty spending is also important when it comes to office desk chairs; there is a large range of available products that cater to a large range of needs. Comfort and style are unquestionably important, but they are more important for some people than for others. For example, people who spend ten hours at their desks everyday and see clients or customers can justify spending much more on a chair than people who work at home for only a few hours a day. Your chair should provide you with a comfortable working environment, but not too comfortable.

Other Considerations

Once you have set up your desk and chair along with any other equipment or supplies you might need, it is important to focus on the organization of your workspace. Everything you need should be easily accessible, and distractions should be kept to a minimum. If your work requires that you use the Internet, restrict yourself to work-related sites. It is okay to personalize your work area with things like photographs (and, indeed, doing so can produce a happier working environment), as long as they are not distracting.

Another useful tip to keep in mind is that your home and your office differ in more than just the amount of distractions present. Few people realize it, but home insurance sometimes does not cover home office furniture, equipment, and supplies. It is important that you check with your insurance company, especially if the total value of your office-related possessions is significantly high.

Setting up your home office is exciting and challenging, but the key to success is adequate forethought and planning and just a dash of creativity!
