When you work at home, the most crucial element in your life is reworking your schedule so that you can manage a busy work schedule and still keep up with a hectic family schedule as well. The most important things should be the highest priority, but prioritizing a work-at-home mother’s (WAHM’s) schedule is not always that easy, since there are often conflicts that are more important to one person than another. To discover the key, follow a few simple tips and guidelines.
Talk to your family when you plan the week’s schedule in order to find out what is important to whom, and to make sure that you have not forgotten anything during your planning. Pick the same day each week whenever possible to sit down together, perhaps an evening that your family already enjoys some time together, and talk about plans for the week. On occasion, you will sometimes discover that events overlap with each other or your work plans, and you will be forced to get creative in order to satisfy everyone. Keep a notepad or some other writing method handy so that you can write down what you need to remember, since relying on your memory alone often leads to forgotten appointments, late projects, or missed deadlines.
Develop your work schedule so that your family can get used to your home office hours much the same as a normal work schedule. For instance, if you work at home during the morning hours, make sure that you are not to be disturbed during these hours every day. The more used to the schedule your family becomes, the less frequently the schedule will be interrupted, much like working out of a normal office environment. The family will learn to plan things around your work at home schedule, making that part of the prioritizing far easier for you and your family members.
Understand your work tasks as far in advance as possible so that you know which tasks are the most pressing each week. It should be noted that things do pop up sometimes unexpectedly, and this can mean some readjusting, but for the most part you will be able to take a look at your to-do list and know what needs to be done first. The jobs with the closest deadline should always take precedence over those with farther deadlines that can wait. This will help you get things done at the right time.
Keep track of upcoming deadlines in a way that works for you. There are dozens of tracking methods that are effective, from spreadsheets to calendars and daily planners, but you have to find a method that works for you. It may take a bit of trial and error to find what is most efficient, but once you know what works you can put it into practice. A working deadline tracker will help you manage your time very efficiently, so that you never miss an important date, event, deadline, or project, so that you can maximize your productivity and profitability.
