Similar to the two sides of a coin, working from home too has two major effects. The upside is that you can take care of your loveable family while you work and be with them. On the other hand, the downside happens to be the chaos and confusion in your workplace due to improper or poor arrangement.
An efficient blogger always manages his/her workplace in order to improve the productivity. After all we know so many full time bloggers who make their full time income by working from home; they're A-listers too.
Here are few tips and tricks for improving productivity while working from home.
Organization
For any work to prosper the key thing you must concentrate on is organization. A well-organized job is always half done. When you have clearly arranged every important bills and documents then you don’t have to burn the midnight oil by searching them during the deadline.
Organization depends on certain features like furniture, space, etc. and your personal commitment to stay organized (I'd say this one is the most important of all).
Always opt for enormous space and compact furniture when you want to work from home because
- if the space is less then you will end up being in a mess, and
- if the furniture is the larger you will load it with unnecessary stuff.
Moreover, select furniture that will be easy for you to sit and use because bad selection of furniture leads to poor health and in turn poor productivity.
Additionally, name/label all the important documents so that it is easy to search.
Further you can even allocate separate racks or shelves for each and every type of work you do (especially if you work for multiple clients).
Decorations
Never overdo it! If we start to pay attention on decorations they're quite tempting and we may never stop (that's from my personal experience). Choose a classy, neat and simplistic way to decorate your home office.
Decorate your workspace with few stickers (of your choice), paint the walls in some peaceful color, allocate space to stick notes/reminders, place some plants or flower vases on your desk - by doing this you are not just helping yourself to relax but also doing something good for Mother Nature.
Additionally, if you have kids you can put their photo on your desk or on the wall of your home office. Trust me, this will surely help you to relax your stressed mind.
Refrain yourself from making your workplace look like a traditional office or like a party hall with more decorations instead of books and documents.
Lighting
This often happens to be the prime concern for many people who work from home. Whatever you try, it is never too easy to provide the lighting that resembles the office environment. This is because office spaces are professionally designed for work and hence good lighting is usually integrated with the infrastructure.
However even at home, we can make the lighting to suit our needs especially when you are into working in the nights. Make sure your lighting fits well for both day and night. Go in for power-saver lamps and go in for pleasant shades in lighting.
Power Supply
Deadlines are very essential in order to improve your productivity therefore you must be pretty sure about the power supply. If you dwell in a place where the power supply is present for 24/7 then it's not a problem. If you're in a place when there is no guarantee on power cuts you must have proper power backup at least for your computer and some lights.
Never Mingle Work and Home
Although, you work from home it doesn’t mean you are going to bed and breakfast in the same room where you are working from. Your workplace should be personal and isolated from rest of your home, as far as possible.
Don't allow others to access your P.C. If this is the only P.C in your home then create separate user logins. Other home members may un-intentionally damage some of your important files.
Location
Last but not the least, location of your office is the important concern in any case. This directly has an effect on your productivity. The workplace shouldn’t be in a noisy environment (especially not near your kids’ bedroom). The location also depends on other factors like the place where the internet access is good, where your mobile signal is excellent etc.
These are the various steps or tips for designing your home office in order to improve productivity. You can follow these steps solely for designing your workplace however if you have partner(s) working with you then you have to modify these according to their needs also.
