| What is the best way to buy sliced apples for apple pie. I'd rather not buy the canned apple pie filing. These would be for apple recipies...probabl pies. My hands ache cutting and pealing the fresh apples...are apple slices sold frozen? |

Hi Pat,
I don't know if apple slices are sold frozen because I freeze my own.
I will peel and core my apples and then slice.
I have a bowl handy and put my slices into the bowl and then sprinkle them with lemon juice and let them sit for 3 to 5 minutes. If I plan on using those for apple pie baking, I will sprinkle on just a tad of granulated sugar and a tad of ground cinnamon. I will then pack them into freezer bags or plastic containers (I use mostly freezer containers so my apple slices don't get squished). I then label them and freeze them.
Now...when I pack them into containers, I measure...I place 2 1/4 cup of apple slices to 2 1/2 cups of apple slices per container as that is usually enough for one nice sized pie.
When I am ready to bake a pie...I remove the container from the freezer and let it sit on my counter for 20 minutes...then put them into my pie shell and prepare my recipe. _________________ ~*Shelly*~
