Canning Basics: Before You Start

Are you new to canning? Before you get started there are some basics you should read up on first. Here are some links to more information about canning.


Before you start canning, take a look at the National Center for Home Food Preservation. On that web site you will find all the basics you need. They are the source for current research-based recommendations for most methods of home food preservation. Find answers to questions about:

  • General food preservation
  • Canning
  • Drying food
  • Freezing food
  • Jams and jellies
  • Pickling
