Peppermint Cookies

This is a great old-fashioned peppermint cookie recipe that is great for Christmas gift giving. One batch makes a lot of cookies. Store them in the freezer and give them as gifts during the holidays.


  • 1/3 c. crushed peppermints
  • 1 1/4 c. sugar
  • 4 c. flour
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

For the peppermints, you can use candy canes or other peppermint candies. Place them in a ziploc bag and crush them with a rolling pin or a hammer.

Combine the crushed candy canes with 1/4 c. sugar and set aside.

In another bowl, beat together shortening, 1 c. sugar, and the brown sugar. Add the egg and the vanilla extract and beat until mixture is light and fluffy.

Refrigerate the dough for at least an hour to chill the dough. Remove the dough from the refrigerator and form into small balls, about the size of a walnut. Roll the balls in the crushed peppermint and place on a cookie sheet lined with a baking mat. Bake for about 10 minutes.

This recipes makes about 4 dozen cookies.
