If you are going to be doing any baking this holiday season, then you will probably be buying (or running out of) pumpkin pie spice. Did you know that you can make it yourself? If you buy your spices in bulk you can make your own pumpkin pie spice for just pennies.
I recently discovered that one of the grocery stores I go to that has bulk foods for sale offers many spices in bulk. If you compare the prices to buying the pre-packaged spices, there is no comparison in the price. It just shows you are paying for the packaging!
When I ran out of pumpkin pie spice pie mix I decided to make my own. I had bought all the spices I needed anyway for other recipes, you just need to mix them together. The place where I bought the spices (WinCo) also has empty spice bottles to store your bulk spices in.
3 tbsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. ground ginger
2 tsp. nutmeg
1 1/2 tsp. allspice
1 1/2 tsp. ground cloves
Mix all the ingredients together and store in an airtight container. Use in recipes that call for pumpkin pie spice.
