Strawberry Equivalents and How to Store Strawberries

It's strawberry season! I used to always buy my strawberries at the grocery store. You can often find good deals on them at the store, but I wanted to buy a larger quantity, so I decided to go looking for a farm where I could purchase them in flats.


Fortunately there are a number of farms near my home where I can purchase fresh strawberries. I found one farm where I could buy two flats of strawberries for only $30. This is a really good deal.

The biggest surprise for me was the difference in taste between strawberries from the store and strawberries grown locally. For one thing, the strawberries grown locally are half the size! And there is no comparison in the taste. Locally grown strawberries taste twice as sweet as the ones I buy at the grocery store.

If you decide to buy a flat of strawberries, then you will need to know how many strawberries come in a flat so that you can plan your recipes accordingly. Here are some general equivalents for measuring fresh strawberries.

  • 1 pint = 2 c. whole berries
  • 1 pint = 2 1/4 c. sliced berries
  • 2 pints or 1 quart = 1 1/2 pounds of strawberries
  • 1 flat = 8 quarts strawberries
  • 1 cup sliced fresh strawberries = 1 10-oz. package of frozen strawberries
  • 1 1/2 to 2 quarts of fresh strawberries are needed for a 9" pie

Choosing Strawberries:

Strawberries do not ripen after they are picked, so make sure the strawberries you buy are completely red and ripe. Remember, strawberries don't have to be large to be ripe, the big strawberries you see at the grocery store are probably not what you will find in your garden or at your local farm.

Do not wash your strawberries before you are ready to use them. Store them in the refrigerator and use them as soon as possible after you get them. If you aren't going to get to them in a day or two, then cut the stems off and place the strawberries in freezer bags and put them in the freezer until you are ready to use them. They will store for months in the freezer.
