04/02/2007: "Movie Review: Amazing Grace"

My daughter and I went to see the movie "Amazing Grace" last night. My daughter had already seen it and was really excited for me to see it too.

Amazing Grace is the story of William Wilberforce, an abolitionist who lived in England in the late 1700's. William Wilberforce spent many years working to abolish slavery in the British Empire, and the movie chronicles his efforts to finally accomplish his goal of ending slavery once and for all.

It wasn't until several years ago that I heard the story about where the hymn "Amazing Grace" actually came from. It was written by a former slave trader (John Newton) who became a Christian preacher. This preacher was William Wilberforce's preacher, and "Amazing Grace" was William's favorite hymn.

This is a great historical film. It is a good educational film for the whole family...there isn't any bad language, violence, or sexual content in the film.
